Learning Yourself with Interview
Going though the interview process is going to be one of the best learning experiences of your life. It is your right of passage into a world of meaningful work, financial independence, and contribution to society. And it all starts with a great interview—because this interview can lead to you landing the job of your dreams. It’s true that some people say that interviewing is just a necessary evil, an exercise that saps time and energy. But they are mistaken. As a career coach, educator, and former corporate executive I have a unique perspective.
Interviewing will tell you a lot about yourself. It will tell you if you have the discipline to prepare for an important event. Because interviewing is high stakes for the candidate, it involves a certain amount of pressure. You’ll find out how you communicate and relate to others in a stressful situation. The more interviews you go on, the more likely you’ll be to land a job—but there’s bound to be rejection along the way. You’ll need to be resilient and bounce back
after you hear “No thank you,” and then motivate yourself to keep at it the next day. You’ll also find out how good you are at overcoming obstacles and persevering in the face of them. It’s as if you are training for an athletic event.
